El efecto divergente del populismo: presidentes populistas y apoyo al régimen en América Latina

A pesar del creciente interés que despierta el populismo, los estudios acerca de la relación entre los gobiernos populistas y el apoyo al sistema político son todavía escasos. Usando datos de 18 países latinoamericanos, en este estudio se argumenta que el populismo ejerce una influencia divergente en el apoyo al régimen político. El análisis muestra que el populismo fortalece el apoyo al régimen entre los votantes “ganadores”, aquellos que dieron su apoyo en las urnas al presidente en turno, pero no entre los perdedores. Asimismo, ofrece evidencia de que la diferencia en el apoyo al régimen entre votantes ganadores y perdedores es más grande en los países gobernados por un presidente populista que en países con presidentes no-populistas.
