Contradictions and Conflict between the Cuarta Transformación and the Feminist Movement
Keywords:
Cuarta transformación, AMLO, feminism, femicidesAbstract
The presidential administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador has had a complicated relationship with the feminist movement. While AMLO has appointed a number of prominent feminists to important positions, he has also been dismissive of women’s issues, and the first half of his term was consumed by massive feminist protests. This essay analyzes how López Obrador’s exit from a programmatic left party and embrace of a populist style of governance helps to explain his conflict with feminist activists. I argue that a populist style of governance is incompatible with feminist demands for women’s autonomy and equality.
