Abstract

The media have become crucial to democratic public life. Research on the subject has predominantly focused on their economic impact, overshadowing other elements that could provide a more nuanced understanding of their effects.

Therefore, it proposes an approach that emphasizes the “capabilities of media power”. The text presents a framework that integrates four key capabilities: economic power, influence in the public sphere, critique of political power, and audience outreach. The guiding question is: how can we assess the capabilities of those who wield media power without reducing it to the economic one? This will be illustrated with existing data from Mexico and Latin America to outline its explanatory potential.
