Abstract

Democracy and electoral competitiveness have changed the Mexican political landscape in many ways. Among other phenomena, the electoral connection that had long been overlooked could now be reconsidered as a dynamic that influences voting behavior in Congress. In the absence of immediate reelection, it is suggested that legislators develop a pattern of progressive ambition, which makes them care about voters preferences. The hypothesis says that the ideological location of the electorate at the state level and presidential popularity are correlated with the way legislators vote, and explain why some congressmen deviate from their party stand during roll calls, whereas others do not. This hypothesis is preliminarily supported by the available data.
