Unchanging Mexican Voter
Keywords:
retrospective voting, economic voting, prospective voting, abstention, changes in the electorate behaviourAbstract
This article argues that the democratization of the Mexican political system is not related to a change uin the voter's calculus. The Mexican voter has remained unchanged. Wht changed in the 90s was the incumbetns economic performance, not the voters. In the three elections here analyzed (1991, 1994, 1997), sociotropic retrospective judgements are the most important elementos in determining turnout and partisan choice. As in other countries, the deterioration of the national economy diminishes the level of support for the incumbent party. However, the electoral impacto of bad economic performance also diminishes the turnout rate.Downloads
