Abstract

The literature on democratic transition and consolidation has used the nation-states as its unit of analysis, leaving aside democratizing processes that take place at the subnational level using Mexico's federal states as its units of analysis. One of the most important findings of this article shows that civic-culture variables at the subnational level have little significance in explaning the current processes of democratization in Mexico's federal states.
