Abstract

The purpose of this research note is to analyze the preliminary data on the roll-call voting behavior of individual legislators in the lower house of the Mexican Congress- The Chamber of Deputies. These data allow us to explore two areas of Mexican legislative politics that have remained unstudied due to lack of information: coalition building and party cohesion. The empirical analysis of coalition building and party cohesion is key to understand contemporary Mexican politics as in the 1997 elections no sigle party was able to win a mojority of seats in the Chamber of Deputies. Two important findings are presented in this research note: firstly, coalition building has mantained lesgilstaive output at previous levels, socondly, party cohesion has been remarkably high.
