Abstract

There is a strong relationship between individual ideological orientations and partisan preferences in Mexico. During the nineties, attitudes towards democracy have defines the most central meaning of the left-right axis of competition, leaving the classic socio- conomic concerns as secondary. However, Mexicans'preferences seem to be evolving from the gradual abandonment of the issue of democracy toward the incorporation of other social and cultural issues, This article analyzes the ideological distribution in Mexico, the average positions that partisan electorates take on that distribution, and the implications that both aspects have for party strategies. It also analyzes the social bases of ideological orientations and the role of ideology in the development of partisan identifications.
