Abstract

The main purpose ofthis literature review is to establish some of the possible research strategies for the study of electoral competition at the local level in Mexico. This article uses different methodological approaches to capture the macro and micro dimensions of electoral political phenomena. The paper argues that the process of democratization of a single-party dominant regime has led to the proliferation of municipalities governed by a political party which is different from that controlling the state government. This situation, which is defined as "juxtaposed government", is changing the electoral landscape, modifying partisan strategies and altering patterns of political mobility for local politicians.
